Sun Valley splits home series with Vermont
Last weekend in their 2016-17 home season finale, Sun Valley Suns hockey players raised their sticks in salute to the “7th Sun,” their Campion Ice House fans who streamed 5,582 strong into the arena for 14 home contests since December.
The Suns, averaging 398 spectators per game this season, drew nearly 700 for their two-game series with the Vermont Switchbacks last Friday and Saturday. The friendly match-up ended up in a split, both teams winning a game.
“It was a fun weekend, real good hockey against the fastest team we’ve played all year,” said Suns coach John Burke.
Vermont ended Sun Valley’s winning streak at six games Saturday with a 4-3 overtime victory. The extra session outcome meant that eight of the 14 Suns home games this season were decided in overtime—and it was the ninth Suns OT game.
On Friday, 2015 Suns scoring champion Spencer Brendel returned to the lineup from a rib injury and immediately made an impact with a three-goal hat trick in Sun Valley’s 7-5 victory.
Vermont led 3-1 only 14 minutes into the game, but the Suns reeled off five unanswered goals for a 6-3 lead. The Switchbacks made it close at 6-5, but Justin Taylor’s third-period power-play goal provided insurance for the Suns. READ MORE…
